About us
Matia Fundazioa began its activity in 1881 when the Basque shipowner and merchant, born in Llodio, José Matia Calvo, bequeathed his assets for the creation of a foundation whose purpose was:
"To collect and find secure subsistence during the days of their lives and to be assisted in their illnesses, the elderly or those absolutely unable to work".
Matia Fundazioa is a Private Non-Profit Foundation, declared to be of general interest, with more than 130 years of experience in the provision of social and health services in Gipuzkoa, whose Board of Trustees is made up of 7 prominent people from different professional fields who participate independently and voluntarily in its governance.
With a clear vocation to contribute to society, Matia Fundazioa is committed to the search, development and permanent application of knowledge and innovation together with its dissemination in society (R+D+i) through the Matia Gerontological Institute, which has been in operation since 2003.
Services are provided at different levels of care in the fields of health, social services and disability, under a comprehensive, person-centred model based on the principles of autonomy, dignity and personalisation.
