1 October, International Day of The Elderly - The Elderly must be included in building a more sustainable world
-
Fundación Grandes Amigos, Fundación Pilares para la autonomía personal, Envejecimiento en Red, HelpAge International España and Matia Fundazioa unite once again for the 1st of October under the initiative 'Soy mayor, soy como tú' ('I am old, I am like you').
-
The organisations are calling on public and private authorities and society in general to take into account the vision, ideas and needs of the older population. Older people are being particularly hard hit by the effects of problems where their experience and participation would be key to building more sustainable and inclusive communities that benefit everyone.
-
The older population, victim and at the same time absent protagonist of challenges such as: social isolation and neighbourhood uprooting; consumerism; access to housing; non-inclusive design of urban planning, homes or transport; rural abandonment; recycling and use of resources in the face of the energy and economic crises; sustainability of pensions, care and dependency systems, among others.
On the occasion of the 1st of October, the International Day of Older Persons is celebrated and from the entities that are part of the initiative "I am older, I am like you" we would like to emphasize the fight against ageism, through the claim of rights on equal terms with other members of citizenship.
