29 November 2023 - The Mayor of Fuenlabrada, Javier Ayala, today signed the agreement for the development of the SHARE project (Sustainable Housing Accommodation for a Regenerative Exchange) with the partners of the project.

The project will allow the creation of flats adapted for the elderly, as well as access to affordable housing for young people in the city.

The signing ceremony was attended by the other collaborating entities: Matia Instituto, the Distance University (UNED), Khora Urban Thinkers, the Fuenlabrada Committee for Coexistence, the Fuenlabrada Housing Institute, Fuenlabrada Media and Animajoven.

This initiative, which is funded through the European Urban Initiative programme, was selected by the European Union from more than 300 projects from cities across the continent.

It is aimed at improving the lives of older people, helping them to maintain their independence on a day-to-day basis, while at the same time giving young people the possibility to access housing.

The City Council will receive 5 million euros for this project, which amounts to approximately 6 million euros, and foresees the recovery and rehabilitation of a municipal space currently in disuse for the construction of 20 flats for elderly people in the city. The homes will have 2 bedrooms, an adapted kitchen and bathroom and will allow them to live in complete autonomy. In addition, they will be complemented with spaces for the common use of the elderly residents in this complex.

Affordable housing for young people

The second part of the project envisages that the homes owned by these elderly people will be made available to young people so that, after some minor improvements and with the agreement of their owners, they can be rented at an affordable price.

Fuenlabrada obtained funding for this project within the framework of the European Urban Initiatives programme, which depends on the European Commission and whose objective is to support regional policies of the Union.
